5 Northern California Adventures

Updated: Dec 28, 2020

Coming back to the Bay Area and soaking in the Nor Cal sun is always a fun filled time. Despite the criticisms of not being as warm or exciting as Southern California, my heart will forever be in the Bay. Here are my five favorite things to do in Northern California.

1. Get donuts by the bucket at Trish’s Donuts!

In the heart of Pier 39, you will find Trish’s Donuts with a long, but quick line. I am not a fan of donuts, but Trish’s Donuts are small, light, fluffy and will literally melt in your mouth. They also sell them in smaller quantities; but $15 (July 2019. Prices do rise) will get you a whole souvenir bucket that you can take home or share with your traveling group. Pier 39 is a popular tourist attraction that includes souvenir shops, a place you can see seals and many delicious restaurants. If you are in the area, venture out to places in the near vicinity like Chinatown and Pier 14. The hustling and bustling Chinatown will fill you with adrenaline, a different culture and a great places to purchase cheap souvenirs. Most of the Piers have landmarks and activities you can do. If you happen to be walking through all of them, stop by Pier 14. There, you will find a walkway that will lead you to a beautiful view of the Bay Bridge.

There are many beautiful hiking trails in San Francisco and Santa Cruz but if you are more inland, Mission Peak is the place for you. Located on Stanford Ave., the Mission Peak trail is popular among locals in the Bay. The pictures with the iconic pole gives proof that hikers have made it through 3 miles of steep hills. I’d recommend taking the Ohlone College Route. There is plenty of parking ($4 parking permit if you want to be safe) and you can see some cows on your way up. The trail is a bit longer but there is a shady path on the way, so it isn’t bad at all.

3. Go to a Pro Sporting Event

From the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants to the San Jose Sharks and Oakland A’s, sporting events are popular in Northern California. Depending on what season you visit, I am sure you will find an upcoming sports game.

4. Visit Santa Cruz Beaches

Now brace yourself, this is not the bikini weather or the warm beach trip you’re thinking of. Pack a sweater and some blankets if you plan to stay late to watch the sunset. Although it is cold, you will often find surfers and locals in the water. I recommend taking a drive down Highway 1 and stopping every time you see a view you want to take pictures of (trust me, there will be a lot). Most people visit Davenport Beach but some of my favorites along Highway 1 are Panther Beach, Shark Fin Cove and Davenport Landing Beach. If you are big on amusement parks, fair food and roller coasters, consider visiting Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Here, you'll find an arcade with a mini-golf and laser tag section, beaches, volleyball nets, restaurants, fun foods and rides; fun activities for everyone!

5. Go Camping in Yosemite

Yosemite is one of my favorite places in the world. If you and your traveling group are looking for a real earthy adventure, Yosemite is the destination. Camping in Yosemite really takes you away from the city life and is a great detox from the world, as there is limited signal. In order to book campsites, you must plan at least a few months in advance and go on sites like these to reserve one. There are many attractions but my favorite activity is to climb the Lower Falls. If you enjoy rock climbing and a beautiful view, this is the activity for you.
